Basel and its environs form Switzerland's third largest city and second largest metropolitan area. On the border of France and German, it has suburbs in either country; the main language is German, in the dialect known as Basel German, but French is also spoken in the city. It lies alongside the Rhine river and is a major industrial center for the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. It is one of Switzerland's most important cultural centers.
